Essex • Re: How do waiting lists work?

If you look through the 'Essex allocations' threads, there is quite a lot of useful information there (parents often commenting on how the position moved or didn't move).

I haven't got any direct experience of waiting lists but based on friends' experience, they could view the position on the waiting list around 21 March once the offers had been accepted or rejected; they could also track the position and how it changed. A girl we know was initially offered her 4th choice, then was offered her third choice a couple of months later (Southend for girls) and her second choice towards the end of the summer - which they accepted. There was quite a lot of movement on the list in the first few days (or even hours) and I know of a child whose position changed by about ten places between the morning and the evening. I believe it slows down after that.

Colchester Royal doesn't have a priority area; I'm not sure whether Southend Boys has a waiting list for IC pupils or only for OOC.

I hope it goes well for your DC.
From the SHSB policy in the Southend City Council 2024 admissions booklet:

Waiting lists, based on the test results, are maintained in each category until 31st December. If a place has been offered and is then declined, a new offer will be made to whichever candidate has the next highest score, exceeding the pass mark, in the same category. If there is no waiting list in the relevant category, the new offer is made from the waiting list in the next priority category, until the priority category limit is reached and/or the school’s overall admission limit is met. Any additional applicants, prior to 31st December, will be added to the waiting list, which will be re-ordered and ranked in line with the published oversubscription criteria. After 1st January, waiting lists are maintained, and places are offered, in accordance with the school’s in-year application process. This may include re-testing.

The whole policy, with explanations of the categories, is on the school website.

Eta, bothe ECC and SCC employ 'presumed acceptance' of the place offered. I don't know about neighbouring LAs.
