This is the issue - the private school system is completely separate from the state school system - the only time private people are compelled to give up their place is when they don't appear in September. In practice they will tell the LA in dribs and drabs - hopefully most do before the appeals or otherwise the places will not benefit wait list people as the wait list becomes irrelevant once over PAN. In other words private school people who release their place before the appeals will allow a wait list person in, whereas places released after that are only accessible by appealSo most independent students will have already withdrawn their state places by now? Ah well.
Independent school offers are generally made between December and February sometime, with acceptance deadlines of a few days after the state school offer day.
not necessarlly - it costs nothing to keep hold of the state school place and some, while they may have paid a deposit for the indie ... are still "thinking about it" and use that as an excuse to hold onto the place. Induction / transition days can goad some of them into committing one way or the other - some just leave it until the beggining of term (unfortunately)
