Hello,
I'm looking for advice from someone knowledgeable about the material. Target school is Latymer. Exam board is GL (maths and VR) and and school written (comprehension and creative writing). I know the school (sibling attends) and know what is required.
My child is averaging about 60pc on moderately difficult maths papers, 70pc on moderately difficult VR papers (timer) and 80pc plus untimed. I know this is not enough. Times tables are good. Core knowledge is good. Problem solving in a real life context is good.
Comprehension is sometimes very good and sometimes variable depending on whether child perceives the question as 'difficult' (leading to stress and poorer performance). General understanding of written material and creative writing is excellent. Reads widely and has a good vocab. Can talk well about language devices during general conversation.
The exam is in a month's time.
Issues
* Loss of focus during the test sessions (which are only 30 mins) leading to attempts to make up time on easier questions and then errors
* Reluctance to consistently employ helpful techniques such as underlining key words in questions etc which makes harder questions more difficult to tackle
* General lack of speed
Competition is tough as other candidates have advantages like having gone to a private primary school.
My question is: which are the most appropriate revision materials to focus on...
Please no replies along the lines of 'is your child right for grammar etc' as we can't give up now and need to boost scores and confidence.
Said child would be very happy at this school. We just need the exam to be in December rather than September which is sadly not an option!
Thanks.
